Is America’s AI Story a Warning for India?

By Devendra Singh | IndiaPrimeTV.com | Internet Desk Is America’s AI Story a Warning for India? If artificial intelligence is the new strategic resource of the 21st century, will India become a creator of this technology—or remain merely its largest consumer? For decades, oil shaped global politics, economic power and military influence. Today, data, computing power and artificial intelligence are beginning to play that same role.Just as control over oil defined geopolitical influence in the 20th century, control over AI is likely to determine economic competitiveness, national security and global leadership in the decades ahead. This shift has placed American AI companies—particularly Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind and xAI—at the center of a growing debate about technology, sovereignty and geopolitical power. The question for India is not whether these developments are frightening. The real question is whether they serve as a warning.

Separating Facts from Claims

Social media and alternative media platforms have circulated claims that AI companies have been used to influence regime change, shape oil politics or directly support military operations. However, there is no publicly verified evidence that an AI model was used to remove a foreign leader from power or independently authorize military action. At the same time, it is undeniable that ties between AI companies and governments are becoming increasingly close.

In July 2025, the U.S. Department of Defense announced a contract worth up to $200 million with Anthropic to develop AI solutions for national security applications. The agreement was signed through the Department’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO).Anthropic has also developed specialized “Claude Gov” models designed for U.S. national security agencies operating in secure environments.Reports have indicated that tensions later emerged between Anthropic and U.S. officials over the limits of military AI use. The company has publicly opposed the use of its technology for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous lethal weapons. What remains important is this: there is no evidence that Anthropic itself decided military operations or orchestrated political change.

Why the Anthropic-Pentagon Deal Matters

The agreement between Anthropic and the Pentagon signals a broader transformation.Artificial intelligence is no longer just a commercial technology. It is becoming part of critical national infrastructure. Military organizations increasingly view AI as a tool to:

  • Accelerate intelligence analysis
  • Improve strategic decision-making
  • Strengthen cybersecurity
  • Optimize logistics and operations
  • Support multilingual data analysis
  • Enhance battlefield awareness

The Pentagon’s AI strategy reflects a growing reality: future geopolitical influence may depend as much on algorithms and computing power as on military hardware.

The Rise of Claude and Anthropic

Anthropic’s growth has accelerated rapidly in 2026. According to industry estimates, Claude’s monthly active users increased from approximately 60 million in December 2025 to 245 million by May 2026. Its global AI assistant market share rose from around 3% to more than 10% during the same period. India has emerged as one of Anthropic’s fastest-growing markets, with Claude’s share increasing from 2.2% to nearly 10%. However, there is no evidence that this growth resulted directly from its relationship with the Pentagon or any public dispute involving the U.S. government. Analysts attribute Anthropic’s success to several factors:

  • Strong coding performance
  • Large context windows
  • Enterprise-focused products
  • Investments from Amazon and Google
  • A safety-first approach known as “Constitutional AI”

At the same time, ChatGPT remains the world’s largest AI assistant platform, with more than one billion monthly active users globally. While ChatGPT’s market share has declined due to increasing competition from Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity, its overall user base continues to grow.

The Real Issue: Data Sovereignty

The debate is not about whether one AI company is more trustworthy than another. The fundamental question is: who controls the data? Most AI companies state that they protect user privacy. However, like other technology firms, they may be required to comply with lawful requests, court orders or national security regulations in the jurisdictions where they operate. As AI becomes more deeply integrated into healthcare, education, finance, governance and defense, control over data will become increasingly important.Countries that control data and computing infrastructure will have a significant advantage in developing advanced AI systems.

Why India Should Be Concerned

India is one of the world’s largest digital markets and among the fastest-growing users of AI technologies.Yet most of the advanced AI models used in India are developed by foreign companies. This creates several long-term challenges.

1. Data Dependency

Indian users generate massive amounts of data, but much of that data is processed through foreign platforms Data is the fuel that powers AI systems.Countries with access to larger and more diverse datasets are better positioned to build competitive AI models.

2. Computing Infrastructure Gap

Developing cutting-edge AI requires enormous investments in GPUs, data centers, energy infrastructure and semiconductor manufacturing.India remains heavily dependent on foreign technology providers in many of these areas.

3. Algorithmic Sovereignty

If India’s critical sectors—including healthcare, agriculture, education and governance—depend on foreign AI systems, the country risks losing control over its digital future.Experts increasingly describe this challenge as a form of “digital colonialism.”

4. National Security Risks

AI is rapidly becoming central to defense and intelligence operations.Dependence on foreign AI systems could create vulnerabilities during periods of geopolitical tension or conflict.

Is India Becoming an AI Consumer Instead of an AI Builder?

India has emerged as a global leader in AI adoption, but it still lags behind in the development of foundational AI models. The IndiaAI Mission, with an approved budget of approximately ₹10,372 crore over five years, aims to strengthen the country’s AI ecosystem. However, compared with investments in the United States, China and Europe, India’s spending remains modest. The challenge is not whether India should continue investing in social welfare programs. The real challenge is finding the right balance between immediate welfare needs and long-term investments in strategic technologies.

What India Must Do Next

To become an AI leader rather than simply an AI market, India must:

  • Develop sovereign foundation models
  • Expand high-performance computing infrastructure
  • Build national GPU clusters
  • Accelerate semiconductor manufacturing
  • Invest in Indian language AI models
  • Support universities and startups through long-term funding
  • Strengthen data protection frameworks
  • Create secure AI systems for government and defense applications

Conclusion

The story of Anthropic, OpenAI and other American AI companies is not just about technology. It is about power. As AI becomes a strategic asset, governments and private companies are forming partnerships that could reshape the global balance of influence. For India, the key question is no longer which AI model is the most advanced. The real question is whether India will become a builder of AI—or remain one of its largest consumers. The decisions made today about data, infrastructure and innovation will determine India’s position in the global AI race for decades to come.
