A devastating fire broke out on Saturday evening, August 22, in a two-storey building on Railway Station Road in Bakhtiyarpur, Patna district, Bihar. Three members of the same family, including a six-month-old baby girl, were killed in the blaze.
Fire May Have Started During a Puja
According to the preliminary investigation, the fire may have started when a spark generated during a puja ceremony inside a shop fell onto stored mobil oil and hardware materials. The highly combustible material reportedly caused the fire to spread rapidly, trapping people who were living on the upper floor of the building.
Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours before bringing it under control. Police subsequently recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination.
Parents Jumped From the Roof to Escape the Flames
As the fire intensified and smoke and flames surrounded the upper portion of the building, the baby’s parents, Mouni Kumari and Shivam Kumar, reportedly jumped from the roof in an attempt to save their lives.
Mouni Kumari suffered a serious leg injury, reportedly resulting in a fracture, and was taken to hospital for treatment. The circumstances surrounding the family’s escape and the fire are being examined by the authorities.
Three Members of the Same Family Among the Victims
The three people who died in the fire were from the same family. The deceased have been identified as:
- Geeta Devi, 70 — mother of Pankaj Kumar
- Reema Devi, 45 — wife of Pankaj Kumar
- Sundari Kumari, 6 months — the infant girl
The incident has raised concerns about fire safety in buildings where shops storing combustible materials operate alongside residential accommodation.
Investigation Underway
Police and fire officials are investigating the exact cause and circumstances of the incident. The preliminary possibility of a spark from the puja igniting combustible materials will be examined as part of the investigation.
