Australia’s marine industry has long been recognised for its boatbuilding capability, practical innovation and deep connection to life on the water. Less often acknowledged, however, is the level of world-class superyacht design talent working from our own shores.
Brisbane-based Misha Merzliakov Yacht Design is a clear reminder that Australian design has a meaningful place in the international superyacht conversation.

Misha Merzliakov has built a career around a disciplined understanding of naval architecture and a strong eye for proportion, detail and emotion. His work is not simply about creating striking images or ambitious concepts. It is about understanding how a vessel will be used, where it will travel, how people will move through it, and how design can heighten the experience of being at sea.
With a degree in naval architecture and international recognition that includes being named among the finalists for BOAT International’s Young Designer of the Year, Misha has steadily developed a portfolio that demonstrates both range and confidence. His 52-metre catamaran concept Eva, which earned him selection as one of five finalists in that global competition, helped establish his credentials early. Since then, his studio has continued to work across exterior design, interior design, lighting and furniture, giving each project a consistent and carefully resolved design language.
That broader body of work was recently brought into focus at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, where Misha shared his latest release, the 42-metre explorer concept Shogun.

While Shogun is a significant design in its own right, it also says much about Misha’s personal approach. The concept is bold, deliberate and capable, with Japanese historical influences informing both its name and exterior presence. It has the stance of a true explorer, yet avoids unnecessary aggression. Instead, it feels purposeful, refined and ready for serious use.
Designed with the intrepid owner in mind, Shogun is an all-aluminium, long-range warm-water explorer with a low draft that allows the vessel to operate closer to inshore areas and reefs. At 42 metres overall, with a 9-metre beam and 2.5-metre draft, the vessel is conceived for tropical reef exploration, surf missions and extended cruising. Its specification includes accommodation for 10 to 12 passengers and eight crew, a top speed of 15 knots and a 10-knot range speed.
The interior direction is equally revealing. Rather than overpowering guests with excessive ornamentation, Misha has taken a coastal minimalist approach with restrained luxury and generous glazing throughout. The intention is to let the environment do much of the talking, whether the yacht is anchored near a remote reef, on a surf trip through the tropics, or spending time in the Mediterranean.

Open-air dining and lounge spaces reinforce that connection to place, while the aft beach club, hull-side doors and opening transom door bring guests closer to the water. The arrangement includes two salons, with an option for a full-beam sky lounge, alongside a range of toys above and below deck.
Shogun has been developed with Periscope Naval Architects and is accompanied by the Salt Yachts A44 chase boat, another Australian project to which Misha has contributed design expertise. The pairing reinforces a theme that runs through his work: vessels should be beautiful, but they must also be useful, capable and relevant to the way owners actually want to spend time on the water.
For Marine Business News readers, the significance of Misha Merzliakov Yacht Design extends beyond one new concept. His work demonstrates that international-standard superyacht thinking is not confined to Europe or the established design capitals. It is also being developed here in Australia, by designers who understand our coastlines, our boating culture and the growing appetite for adventure-focused luxury.
In Shogun, Misha has created more than a yacht concept. He has presented a statement of confidence in Australian design talent and its capacity to stand confidently on the world stage.

Use of AI Tools to Manage Independent Contractors Carries Risk of Reclassification of Contractors as Employees – JD Supra

For decades, employment law has focused on, among other factors, a purported employer’s level of control over a worker in assessing whether a worker is correctly classified as an independent contractor (IC) or an employee. While control has not been, and is not now, the only determinative factor in classifying an IC or an employee, […]
