Key Appointments Effective from 1 July 2026

Lt Gen Sandeep Jain appointed Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS)

Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain will assume the role of Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS), becoming the second-highest-ranking officer in the Indian Army after the Chief of Army Staff. As VCOAS, he will oversee force modernization, operational planning, capability development, logistics, and strategic coordination across the Army.


Lt Gen Rajesh Pushkar takes over Southern Command

Lieutenant General Rajesh Pushkar has been appointed General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Southern Command, headquartered in Pune.

A veteran Armoured Corps officer with nearly 35 years of distinguished service, Lt Gen Pushkar previously commanded the II Corps (Kharga Corps) at Ambala. Throughout his career, he has led an infantry division, an independent armoured brigade, served with the Indian Military Training Team (IMTRAT) in Bhutan, and represented India as Defence Attaché in Moscow. He also served as Director General Territorial Army at Army Headquarters.

Southern Command is the Indian Army’s largest geographical command and plays a critical role in safeguarding India’s peninsular region, coastline, and vital military infrastructure.


Lt Gen Mohit Malhotra to Head South Western Command

Lieutenant General Mohit Malhotra has been appointed GOC-in-C, South Western Command, headquartered in Jaipur. He succeeds Lt Gen Manjinder Singh, who is retiring.

Commissioned into the 47 Armoured Regiment in 1989, Lt Gen Malhotra has held several important operational and staff appointments, including:

  • Commander, 12 Corps (Jodhpur)
  • Commander, 1 Armoured Division (Patiala)
  • Chief of Staff, Eastern Command
  • Additional Director General (Strategic Communication), Army Headquarters

The South Western Command, also known as Sapta Shakti Command, is responsible for one of India’s most strategically sensitive sectors along the western frontier.


Lt Gen Manish Luthra to Command II Corps (Kharga Corps)

Following Lt Gen Rajesh Pushkar’s elevation, Lieutenant General Manish Luthra has been appointed the new General Officer Commanding (GOC), II Corps (Kharga Corps) at Ambala.

The Kharga Corps is one of the Indian Army’s premier strike formations and plays a crucial role in India’s operational preparedness on the western front. The Corps is known for its high mobility, armoured strength, and rapid deployment capabilities during conventional military operations.
