INDIAPRIMETV.COM | World News | June 25, 2026 Venezuela Twin Earthquakes 2026: Twin 7.2 and 7.5 Quakes Devastate Caracas, State of Emergency Declared : Venezuela is facing one of the worst natural disasters in its modern history after two powerful earthquakes struck the country within just 40 seconds, causing widespread destruction in Caracas and several western states. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake measured 7.2 magnitude and was later classified as a foreshock. Around 39–40 seconds later, a much stronger 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck, making it one of the most powerful seismic events recorded in Venezuela in more than a century.

State of Emergency Declared

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez has declared a nationwide state of emergency following the devastating earthquakes. While authorities confirmed fatalities, the government has not yet released an official nationwide death toll as rescue operations continue across affected regions.

Emergency teams, firefighters, military units, and volunteers are working around the clock to search for survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings.

Caracas Suffers Heavy Damage

The capital city of Caracas witnessed scenes of panic and destruction as several multi-story buildings collapsed in neighborhoods including Los Palos Grandes and Altamira.

Residents rushed into the streets carrying children, elderly relatives, and pets as powerful aftershocks continued through the night. Dust clouds covered major roads while emergency sirens echoed throughout the city.

Local authorities reported that rescue workers successfully pulled survivors from collapsed structures despite difficult conditions and widespread infrastructure damage.

Why Was the Earthquake So Destructive?

Experts say the shallow depth of both earthquakes significantly increased their destructive power.

Key seismic data:

  • First earthquake: Magnitude 7.2
  • Depth: Approximately 22 kilometers
  • Second earthquake: Magnitude 7.5
  • Depth: Approximately 10 kilometers
  • Time gap: Around 40 seconds
  • Epicenter: Near Morón on Venezuela’s Caribbean coast

The shallow nature of the quakes meant that seismic energy reached the surface with enormous force, causing severe structural failures.

The Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía has been temporarily closed due to damage assessments and safety concerns.Power outages, internet disruptions, and communication failures have affected several regions, making rescue coordination more challenging. Metro and public transport services have also been suspended in many areas.

Tsunami Warning Later Cancelled

Shortly after the earthquakes, tsunami advisories were issued for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. However, US authorities later canceled the warnings after further analysis showed no major tsunami threat to the region.

USGS Warns of Potentially High Casualties

The USGS PAGER system has classified the event under a red alert category, indicating a possibility of very high casualties and extensive economic losses. It is important to note that these are predictive estimates and not official confirmed death figures. The actual number of casualties remains unknown as rescue operations continue.

International Assistance Begins

Neighboring Colombia has reportedly offered technical and operational assistance to Venezuela as emergency teams continue rescue missions.Humanitarian organizations are also preparing aid packages, medical support, and emergency supplies for affected communities.

The Situation Remains Critical

Authorities have warned residents to avoid damaged buildings and remain alert for aftershocks.Schools have been closed, emergency shelters are being established, and thousands of people have spent the night in open spaces fearing additional tremors.
