The Indian Women’s Hockey Team fought back twice to secure a 2-2 draw against Paris Olympic silver medallists
China in their opening match of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands.
Alongside this gritty international hockey performance, today’s sports landscape features a major historic cricket milestone in Australia, a high-stakes football clash in England, and massive transfer updates in European club football.

FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup: India vs China Opener

Led by captain Salima Tete and head coach Sjoerd Marijne, India took an aggressive stance early in the Pool D fixture. Forward Navneet Kaur opened the scoring for India, but China equalised via a penalty stroke by Zhang Ying right at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Deepika converted a tactical penalty corner to restore India’s lead. However, China’s relentless second-half pressure paid off when Ma Ning scored from a penalty corner in the third quarter to equalise.
Despite desperate late-game attacks from the Chinese squad, veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia held the line to preserve a valuable point. Following England’s 4-0 routing of South Africa, India and China sit tied for second place in Pool D. India will next face South Africa on August 18.

Historic Test Match: Bangladesh Stun Australia in Darwin

In one of the biggest upsets in modern Test cricket, Bangladesh defeated Australia by nine wickets at the Marrara Oval in Darwin. This monumental win marks Bangladesh’s first-ever Test victory on Australian soil and only their second overall triumph against the top-ranked Australian side.
The historic victory was anchored by a dominant all-round performance, highlighted by all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who dismantled the Australian batting line-up to orchestrate a comfortable chase for the visitors on Day 3.

Football: FA Community Shield & European Transfer Blockbusters

  • Community Shield Clash: In England, Premier League winners Arsenal and FA Cup holders Manchester City went head-to-head at Wembley Stadium for the traditional seasonal curtain-raiser, the FA Community Shield. Both squads featured star-studded lineups ahead of the official English top-flight kick-off.
  • Ferran Torres Moves to PSG: In a blockbuster European transfer announcement, La Liga champions FC Barcelona confirmed the sale of forward Ferran Torres to Paris Saint-Germain. The 26-year-old Spanish star completed his medical and signed a long-term contract running until 2031 in a deal reported to be worth €50 million.
  • Mohamed Salah’s New Chapter: Former Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah made a dramatic competitive debut for Turkish club Trabzonspor. Coming off the bench as a second-half substitute, Salah’s debut ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Kasimpasa in their Turkish Super Lig opener.
