India Prime | Film Desk | BoycottSitaareZameenPar: Aamir Khan and ‘Sitare Zameen Par’ Stir Controversy

Aamir Khan’s upcoming film *Sitare Zameen Par*, set for release on June 20, 2025, has already sparked controversy. According to some reports, the trailer was initially scheduled for release on May 8, 2025, but due to escalating India-Pakistan tensions and the Pahalgam attack, Aamir’s production team postponed it. This decision was made to show solidarity with the Indian Army. Some media reports claim the film’s release date might also be deferred, though the makers have not confirmed this.

The film is a spiritual sequel to the 2007 superhit *Taare Zameen Par* and a remake of the Spanish film *Champions* (2018). Aamir plays a basketball coach named Gulshan, a rude and quarrelsome character who, as part of a court-ordered punishment, forms a basketball team of differently-abled children.

Aamir’s Old Turkey Controversy
As soon as the trailer was released on May 14, 2025, some social media users intensified calls to boycott the film. The reason cited is Aamir’s old Turkey controversy. In 2020, Aamir met Turkey’s First Lady Emine Erdogan, which some deemed anti-India since the Turkish President had spoken against the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, during recent India-Pakistan tensions, Pakistan reportedly used Turkish weapons, further fueling the controversy.

Accusations of Being a “Scene-by-Scene” Copy of the Spanish Film *Champions* (2018)
After the trailer’s release, some viewers on social media accused the film of being a “scene-by-scene” copy of the Spanish film *Champions* (2018). Although it is an official remake, critics argue that Aamir presented it as an “original inspirational film,” leading to misunderstandings. This has led to the hashtag #BoycottSitaareZameenPar trending.

*Aamir Khan’s Past Controversies**
Aamir has faced criticism for meeting Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi in Saudi Arabia. More recently, a deepfake video of Aamir was used for promotional purposes, against which he filed an FIR.
