PML-N’s Iftikhar Gillani elected as PoK ‘prime minister

The recent political shift in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) saw Barrister Iftikhar Ali Gillani of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) elected as the new ‘prime minister’ during a legislative session in Muzaffarabad. Gillani secured 30 out of 44 votes in an election heavily backed by Pakistan’s federal ruling coalition. Despite the PML-N presenting this transition as a step toward stability and development, geopolitical analysts and ground reports suggest that this political maneuvering is highly unlikely to improve the volatile situation in the region.
The primary reason for widespread skepticism is that Gillani is widely viewed as an imposed leader by the local population. He had notably lost his constituency seat in the general elections but was brought into the legislative assembly through a backdoor technocrat seat reserved for professionals. Local activists and regional political parties have heavily criticized this move, labeling Gillani a “loser candidate” and viewing his appointment as direct interference from Islamabad, which undermines the democratic will of the local people.
Furthermore, the structural problems plaguing PoK cannot be resolved simply by changing the political figurehead. The region has been gripped by massive civil unrest led by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), protesting soaring inflation, exorbitant electricity bills, and the removal of subsidies on basic commodities like wheat. Deep-seated resentment against the heavy presence of Pakistani security forces, human rights violations, and internet shutdowns remains unaddressed, meaning that a puppet administration will likely fuel further public anger rather than suppress it.

Three-Storey Section of Swaminarayan Temple Collapses into Pit in Prayagraj

A three-storey section of the famous Swaminarayan Temple, located in the George Town police station area of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, collapsed suddenly late Friday night and sank into a deep pit dug nearby. The incident took place at around 11:00 PM on Friday, August 28, 2026. When the structure fell late at night, it caused such a loud explosion that people rushed out of nearby houses and shops in panic.
Construction work for a commercial-cum-residential apartment complex was underway at the rear end of the temple, for which a very deep pit had been excavated. Due to continuous heavy rainfall, the pit filled with water, causing soil erosion that severely weakened the temple’s foundation. This led to the collapse of the entire three-storey building. Fortunately, no one was present in that section at the time of the incident, and no casualties have been reported. The administration and police arrived at the scene and breathed a sigh of relief.
The collapsed section of the temple was used as a guest house (Dharamshala) for South Indian devotees and other travelers to stay.

Nepal More Than 2,400 People Reported Missing

320 Indians Still Missing as Rescue Operations Continue

The devastating flash floods along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors have left hundreds dead and thousands missing. The latest reports put the combined number of missing people in Nepal and Tibet at around 2,482, including 320 Indian nationals. Rescue teams are continuing search operations despite difficult terrain, damaged infrastructure and adverse weather conditions.

The situation remains fluid, and casualty and missing-person figures are being revised as authorities receive information from remote areas. More than 3,700 people have reportedly been rescued in Nepal, while authorities continue monitoring the possibility of further flooding in vulnerable Himalayan areas.

149 Indians Safely Reach Nepal from China; India Sends More Relief

There is some relief amid the disaster as 149 Indian nationals who had been affected by the floods safely crossed from China into Nepal. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has also released details concerning the Indians who reached safety.

India has simultaneously stepped up humanitarian assistance to Nepal. Additional relief supplies, including humanitarian assistance and disaster-relief material, have been sent to support people affected by the floods. India has also indicated that specialised technical assistance may be provided for difficult rescue operations.

More Than 100 Feared Trapped Inside a Tunnel in Nepal

Rescue teams are facing another major challenge in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, where more than 100 people are believed to be trapped inside a mud-filled tunnel associated with the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project. Thick mud, damaged access routes and difficult weather conditions have complicated the rescue effort.

Authorities and rescue teams are working to reach the affected area using available equipment and specialised resources. The tunnel operation has emerged as one of the most difficult rescue missions following the flash floods.

Fresh Flood Risk Adds to Rescue Challenges

Authorities are continuing to monitor water bodies and river systems in the Himalayan region following the initial disaster. A glacier collapse triggered the massive torrent of rock, ice, mud and debris, while a newly formed lake created additional concerns about possible secondary flooding.

Rescue operations have been affected by difficult weather conditions, with aerial operations facing interruptions. Officials are also working to ensure food, medical assistance and other essential supplies reach communities cut off by damaged roads and bridges.

Suspected Pakistani Drone Spotted Along LoC in Rajouri

In another major national security development, a suspected Pakistani drone was spotted along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri sector. Security forces launched a search operation following the reported aerial activity near the LoC.

Security agencies are investigating the purpose of the drone activity and continuing surveillance in the area. The development has prompted increased vigilance along the sensitive border sector.

Delhi-NCR CNG Price Hiked by ₹3.89 Per Kg

Commuters and vehicle owners in Delhi-NCR are facing higher fuel costs after CNG prices were increased by ₹3.89 per kilogram. The revised price in Delhi is ₹86.98 per kg, up from ₹83.09 per kg. The new rates came into effect from August 29.

The price increase is expected to affect private CNG vehicle owners as well as auto-rickshaw, taxi and other commercial vehicle operators. The rise has been linked to increased LNG import costs amid continuing geopolitical tensions.

Gaza: Israeli Strikes Leave Five Dead

The conflict in Gaza continues to remain an important international story. Reports citing local hospital officials said Israeli airstrikes killed five people in Gaza on Friday, despite a fragile ceasefire arrangement.

The latest incidents have renewed concerns over the stability of the ceasefire and the humanitarian situation in the region. International attention remains focused on efforts to reduce violence and provide humanitarian assistance to civilians.

India Continues Humanitarian Support for Flood-Hit Nepal

India has continued to provide humanitarian assistance to Nepal following the devastating floods. Relief consignments containing essential disaster-response material, medicines and food supplies have been dispatched to support the neighbouring country.

The scale of the disaster has also created demand for specialised technical support, particularly for difficult rescue operations in tunnels and remote mountainous locations. Rescue agencies continue to coordinate efforts as authorities assess the damage and plan the next phase of rehabilitation.
