FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – A Fargo business owner is facing criticism after resharing social media posts containing a disability slur.
Valley News Live received submissions to its Whistleblower Hotline showing posts reshared by Chad Klimek, owner of Southtown Pourhouse. The posts described Minnesota Governor, Tim Walz, using the “r-word.”
The posts have drawn attention from several community members and local disability advocacy organizations.
“This hurts my heart. I think our folks with Down syndrome who we see day-in and day-out, they’re the hardest working people in my entire realm,” said Kira Knutson, Executive Director of GiGi’s Playhouse.
GiGi’s Playhouse offers free, educational and therapeutic programs to individuals with Down syndrome from birth to adulthood.
The director of the organization said she was disappointed by the choice of words after learning the slur was posted by a local business owner.
“All of our local business owners, anyone who has any kind of spotlight in the community, it is so important to be a role model,” Knutson said.
These posts surfaced after President Trump publicly used the same word on his X page, also directed toward the Minnesota governor. Posts from Elon Musk using the “r-word” also came to light.
When contacted for comment, Klimek did not agree to an on-camera interview.
He explained the posts were “A cartoon meme meant to portray how incompetent and corrupt Tim Walz has been as the Governor of Minnesota.”
“Incompetent and corrupt are not words we would use to describe our folks with down syndrome who come to GiGi’s Playhouse,” Knutson said.
Disability advocates, like Knutson, are demanding an apology from Klimek.
“Don’t explain it away, just stop using that word, there are other words to use. This one is hurtful to people who work hard, who are accountable, who are beautiful parts of the world here,” she added.
Gigi’s Playhouse encourages anyone who hears this language to have a conversation about the harm these words cause.
