1. Current Status of the Injured
- A total of 41 to 42 passengers were injured in the collision, including women and children.
- Fifteen passengers are reported to be in serious condition and have been admitted as in-patients for intensive medical care.
- The injured are receiving treatment at Melur Government Hospital (Melur GH) and Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai, where specialized medical teams are monitoring their condition.
- Some critically injured patients have also been referred to a private hospital in Madurai for advanced treatment.
2. Police Action and Case Registered
Jurisdiction
The accident occurred near Vanchinagaram village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Kottampatti Police Station. Accordingly, a case has been registered at the station.
Criminal Case
Police have registered a criminal case against the driver of the KMR Travels private omni bus for alleged negligent driving.
The investigation has been initiated under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:
- Section 106(1) – Causing death by negligence (corresponding to the former IPC Section 304A).
- Section 281 – Rash and negligent driving.
- Section 125 – Acts endangering human life or causing grievous injury.
According to the preliminary investigation, the accident occurred after the driver allegedly lost control of the bus, crossed the central divider, and collided with a government bus travelling in the opposite direction.
3. Compensation
As the accident occurred earlier today, the Tamil Nadu Government is in the process of announcing official ex gratia compensation.
Under the state’s existing relief norms, the families of those killed may receive ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund (CMPRF), while seriously injured victims may receive financial assistance ranging from ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh.
The final compensation package is expected to be officially announced by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
4. Condolences
State Administration
Local ministers, the Madurai District Collector, and senior officials from the Kottampatti administration visited the accident site to review the rescue and relief operations and expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), along with several political leaders, has expressed condolences to the bereaved families.
The state government has also directed the local administration and hospital authorities to ensure free, high-quality medical treatment for all injured passengers.

How the Accident Happened
According to preliminary reports, the private omni bus, which was travelling from Chennai, suddenly lost control near Vanjinagar on the Tiruchirappalli–Madurai National Highway.
The bus crossed the central divider and collided head-on with a Madurai–Tiruchirappalli TNSTC government bus travelling in the opposite direction.
The impact was so severe that the government bus overturned on the highway, while the private omni bus veered off the road and crashed into a passenger shelter, causing extensive damage.
Rescue Operations
Following the accident, teams from the Kottampatti Police, Fire and Rescue Services, and National Highway Patrol rushed to the scene.
Rescue personnel extricated passengers trapped inside the buses before shifting the injured to Melur Government Hospital and Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai for emergency treatment.
Hospital authorities said several victims remain in critical condition.
