SoundExchange President and CEO Michael Huppe discusses AI's impact on music royalties, copyright challenges, and protecting human artists.
Michael Huppe, President and CEO of SoundExchange, recently sat down with Bloomberg to discuss the burgeoning impact of artificial intelligence on the music industry. As the organization responsible for collecting and distributing digital performance royalties for sound recordings, SoundExchange plays a crucial role in ensuring artists and rights holders are compensated for their work.

Michael Huppe leads SoundExchange, a non-profit organization that represents the entire spectrum of the recorded music industry. SoundExchange serves as a central hub for collecting and distributing royalties generated from the public performance of sound recordings across various platforms, including streaming services and traditional radio. The organization processes vast amounts of data, managing relationships with over 800,000 music creators and more than 13,000 revenue sources.
Huppe highlighted the dual nature of AI in music creation. While acknowledging the rapid advancements and creative potential of AI-generated music, he also emphasized the significant challenges it poses to the existing royalty system. “AI is fascinating, it’s changing how we think about creativity,” Huppe stated, while also noting the need for careful consideration of its implications.
The full discussion can be found on Bloomberg Podcast‘s YouTube channel.
A key concern for SoundExchange is the potential for AI-generated content to circumvent traditional copyright protections. Huppe explained that if music is created entirely by AI and lacks human authorship, it may not be eligible for copyright, creating a complex legal and financial vacuum. This raises questions about who should be compensated and how those royalties should be distributed.
To illustrate the scope of SoundExchange’s work, Huppe provided figures on the organization’s financial operations. “We collect and distribute more than 13 billion dollars in digital performance royalties,” he shared. This massive undertaking involves tracking plays across numerous platforms and ensuring that payments reach the correct artists and labels. The organization has seen substantial growth, moving from distributing around 25 million dollars 15 to 20 years ago to over a billion dollars annually.
Huppe articulated SoundExchange’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of human artists. He stressed the importance of establishing clear guidelines and safeguards to prevent AI from undermining the livelihoods of musicians. “We need to ensure that when AI is used, it’s done in a way that respects the human creative element,” Huppe said. He further elaborated on the potential for AI to be used to siphon revenue, citing instances where AI-generated tracks might mimic popular artists without proper licensing or compensation, leading to fraud.
The conversation also touched upon the vast quantities of AI-generated music now being uploaded to streaming platforms. Huppe noted that while the quality of AI-generated music is improving, much of it still lacks the creative spark that resonates with listeners. However, he also acknowledged the potential for AI to be a powerful tool for artists, augmenting their creative process rather than replacing it entirely.
