A devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia on Monday, August 10, 2026, causing widespread destruction across the country. While initial reports indicated 20 fatalities, the death toll has rapidly risen to 132, with over 570 people injured as rescue teams continue to pull victims from the rubble.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the powerful quake was located in San José del Palmar in the Chocó region, roughly 400 kilometers from the capital city of Bogotá, at a depth of 79 to 107 kilometers. The tremors were so intense that they were felt across borders in neighboring Venezuela and Ecuador.
The disaster has caused massive infrastructural damage, completely destroying more than 86 buildings and leaving over 1,500 homes severely damaged. The coffee-growing city of Pereira was hit hardest, accounting for 60 of the confirmed deaths.
Other major cities, including Cali, Quibdó, and Manizales, also suffered critical impacts. As a safety precaution, authorities have halted operations at seven major airports, including those in Pereira and Manizales, to inspect facilities for structural damage.
The Colombian government has issued a Red Alert for five major cities, and emergency response teams are working around the clock to locate survivors trapped under the debris.
