Air India has reduced its frequencies of international flights in the month of May by between 5% and 25%, depending on the destination, with major reductions coming from destinations in North America, Europe, Australia, and Southeast Asia. This reduction has been brought about by the increase in jet fuel price by 5%, low demand, and political instabilities. According to Campbell Wilson, CEO of Air India, high fuel prices and distance of routes have rendered some of these flights economically unviable.

Reliance Industries is expected to close one crude unit along with some secondary units at their refinery, having a capacity of 660,000 barrels per day, for three to four weeks starting May 15. This follows the resumption of activities at Nayara Energy’s refinery, having a capacity of 400,000 barrels per day, to avert any possibility of fuel shortage.

The Government of India is set to introduce a bill in Parliament to operationalise 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies by increasing the House’s strength from 543 to up to 850 seats. The proposal, which amends Article 81, uses 2011 Census data to redraw constituencies and aims to speed up implementation of the 2023 women’s reservation law. The government will also introduce related bills on delimitation and Union territories to ensure timely rollout of the policy.

Mamata Banerjee has refused to resign after All India Trinamool Congress lost the West Bengal Assembly elections to the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleging the polls were rigged. Despite her stance, experts say she will cease to be Chief Minister once the Assembly term ends on May 6–7, as the BJP, which won a majority of seats, moves to form the next government, with disputes over results expected to be settled through legal channels.
