With the results scheduled for September 14, attention is already shifting from who will win individual wards to a much bigger question: Who will control the mayor’s chair for the next five years?
In Jaipur, voters have cast their ballots across 150 wards. But voters are not directly electing the Mayor. The first stage is the election of councillors, after which the process for choosing the Mayor will take place under the applicable municipal law. This makes the September 14 results only the first part of the power equation.
The crucial question after the counting will therefore not simply be how many wards the BJP or Congress wins. It will be: Which party has enough political strength among the elected councillors to determine who occupies the Mayor’s chair?
Jaipur’s Mayor Seat Adds Another Layer to the Contest
Jaipur’s 2026 Mayor post has been kept unreserved, making the position particularly significant for both major political parties. Once the councillor results are known, party leadership will have to assess not only numbers but also potential candidates, internal factions and the ability of individual councillors to command wider support.
For the BJP, a clear majority would make the process comparatively straightforward. But if the contest produces a closely divided house, the political calculation could become much more complicated.
The Congress would face a similar equation. A strong councillor tally could turn the Mayor’s election into an opportunity to re-establish itself in Jaipur’s urban politics.
The Real Kingmakers Could Be Independents
One of the most important numbers to watch on September 14 will be the number of independent councillors who emerge victorious.
If neither major party secures a comfortable majority, independents could become the decisive political bloc. Candidates who contested after being denied party tickets could suddenly acquire bargaining power far greater than their individual ward victories suggest.
The question could then shift from “Who won Jaipur?” to “Who has the numbers to make the Mayor?”
The political importance of each independent councillor would depend on the final numbers and the ability of the major parties to build the required support.
Deputy Mayor Race Could Become Equally Important
The political contest will not end with the Mayor.
The Deputy Mayor post could also become an important part of the post-election negotiations, particularly if the final councillor numbers are closely balanced.
A party with a clear majority could have greater control over both positions. But in a fractured house, the Deputy Mayor’s post could become part of a broader political arrangement aimed at securing support and maintaining internal balance.
That means the post-result political story could involve several layers: the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, party factions, independents and councillors with strong local influence.
Jaipur Is Not the Only City to Watch
The Mayor question extends beyond Jaipur.
The 2026 civic elections cover major urban centres across Rajasthan, and the reservation status of Mayor posts differs from one municipal corporation to another. Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Bikaner have unreserved Mayor posts, while reservation applies to Mayor positions in several other corporations.
This makes the post-election political map important across the state.
In every major corporation, two separate questions will emerge after counting:
How many councillors did each party win?
And more importantly:
Which political group has the numbers to determine the city’s leadership?
The Five-Year Power Question
The Mayor’s chair is not merely a short-term political prize. Municipal bodies have a normal five-year term, making the post a potentially important centre of urban political power.
The Mayor and the municipal leadership will be associated with decisions involving roads, sanitation, waste management, parking, civic infrastructure, development projects, municipal budgets and other issues that directly affect citizens.
Therefore, the political battle after September 14 will not simply be about who gets a title.
It will be about who controls the city’s civic administration and political agenda for the next five years.
Can the Political Equation Change After the Results?
The possibility of post-result political realignment cannot be ignored, particularly in a closely divided corporation.
Councillors who win as independents, rebels or candidates with strong local support could become important players. Parties may also have to manage competing aspirants for the Mayor’s position.
However, it would be premature before the results to declare that any particular candidate is certain to become Mayor.
The more credible approach is to track the numbers first and then examine the political possibilities.
September 14 Will Answer Only the First Question
The September 14 results will reveal who has won the 150 Jaipur wards. But they may not immediately answer the bigger question of who will control Jaipur’s municipal government.
That answer will depend on the final composition of the corporation, the strength of the two major parties, the number of independents and the political alliances that emerge afterwards.
So, for Jaipur, the election does not necessarily end with the counting of votes.
It may actually mark the beginning of the next political contest:
Who will become Mayor, who will become Deputy Mayor, and who will control Jaipur’s civic politics for the next five years?
