According to official reports, Jammu & Kashmir has recorded 23 fatalities, while another 16 people have died in weather-related incidents across northern and eastern India over the past few days.


Jammu & Kashmir Worst Hit

The Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir is facing the most severe impact of the current monsoon spell.

Over the last three days:

  • 23 people have died following cloudbursts and flash floods.
  • Most fatalities have been reported from Poonch and Rajouri districts.
  • At least seven people remain missing, with search and rescue operations continuing.

Authorities have deployed disaster response teams in the affected regions while damaged roads and disrupted communication continue to hamper relief efforts.


16 More Deaths Across Northern and Eastern India

Heavy rainfall has also caused widespread destruction in several other states.

According to state authorities, 16 additional deaths have been reported from:

  • Uttarakhand
  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • Bihar

The fatalities were caused by:

  • Landslides
  • House collapses
  • Lightning strikes
  • Flash floods

Several districts have reported road closures, damaged infrastructure and localized flooding.


IMD Issues Fresh Rain Alerts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the southwest monsoon will remain very active over the next four to five days, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall expected in several parts of the country.

Northwest Himalayan Region

Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast for:

  • Jammu & Kashmir
  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Uttarakhand

The IMD has warned of:

  • Flash floods
  • Fresh landslides
  • Rising river levels
  • Road blockages in mountainous areas

Delhi-NCR and Northern Plains

For Delhi-NCR, the weather department has predicted:

  • Generally cloudy skies
  • Light to moderate rainfall
  • Thunderstorms between July 23 and July 24

Localized waterlogging and traffic disruptions are also possible.


Eastern and Northeastern India

Extremely heavy rainfall is expected in:

  • Assam
  • Meghalaya

Heavy rain is also likely to continue in:

  • Bihar
  • Jharkhand
  • Sikkim
  • West Bengal

The IMD has cautioned that rising river levels may increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.


Western India

The Konkan region and the ghat areas of Maharashtra are likely to witness persistent heavy rainfall over the coming days.

A Yellow Alert has been issued for Mumbai, where intermittent heavy showers and waterlogging are expected.


IMD Issues Safety Advisory

The India Meteorological Department has highlighted lightning as one of the biggest weather-related threats during this monsoon season.

The IMD has advised residents to:

  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms.
  • Avoid open fields, trees and water bodies during lightning activity.
  • Follow local administration advisories in flood-prone areas.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel to hilly regions.
  • Check live road and highway conditions before starting any journey in mountainous areas.
